A Call to Action

Shoppers and Trends

October 26, 2008

President Kennedy said that “Change is the law of life.  And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”  These are certainly words that we all can take notice of during these very difficult times.  With all of us being challenged by the most turbulent economy in many of our lifetime, sometimes it is difficult to determine if the light at the end of the tunnel is in fact a train.  In a recent Opinion Research Consumer Study, two-thirds of Americans say they are losing ground as inflation outstrips any increases in income.  Additionally, 47 percent say they are having more trouble paying their bills this year than last year.

Meanwhile, consumers are increasingly looking to their local supermarket as an alternative to “eating-out”.  Moreover, as they shop your store they are increasingly looking at price as the most important component of their value proposition.  As you see, experience and respond to these consumer changes, do so with purpose and an action oriented approach that improves customer trust and loyalty long term.  Your customer’s focus on price does not necessarily mean that they are eager to experience a loss in service, quality and improved health and wellness.

Independent retailers across the country continue to be resilient during this turbulent economy.  I don’t think we can get to the future faster, but we should prepare now for that time when consumers will again demand more from those other value components – and not just price.
